The Dining Challenge is an activity where we try to talk in English while eating. We use English to talk even during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. At first, it was hard to start a conversation. The first time, I asked some students, “Can I sit here?” They said yes, but they finished dinner and left the cafeteria right away. I was shocked.
However, I succeeded the second time. We had dinner with two Chinese college students. These women are playwrights and are visiting UCLA for a summer camp. One of them had been to Japan before. We enjoyed talking about Japanese dramas and anime. Although we were nervous, we each tried our best to talk to foreigners!
ダイニングチャレンジとは、食事をしながら英語で会話するアクティビティです。朝食、昼食、夕食の3食を通して、私たちは英語で会話をします。しかし、なかなか会話を始められません。初めて、学生の方に「ここに座ってもいいですか？」と尋ねたとき、「yes」と答えてくれたものの、夕食を終えてカフェテリアから出て行ってしまったので、本当に悔しかったです。
私たちは、中国の大学生と一緒に夕食を食べました。彼女たちは、劇を書く脚本家で、サマーキャンプでUCLAに来ているそうです。女性の内の一人は、日本に来たこともあり、日本のドラマやアニメについての会話を楽しめました。緊張しながらも、それぞれ話しかけられるよう頑張っています！
